Calcite
This spectacular stack of stepped Calcite rhombohedra covers an area of about 11 x 8 cm over a mainly hidden matrix of typical dark greenish-grey and brick-red Dolomitic matrix from Tsumeb mine in Namibia. Individual Calcite crystals are typically between 1 and 1.5 cm on edge, but some are developed to over 2 cm. The largest crystal sits dead in the centre and most crystals have slightly rounded edges forming a bevelled appearance. Almost all the Calcites are transparent, the exceptions being a little cloudy and hence semi-transparent. They have a brilliant glassy lustre and along one long edge all the crystal faces on the underside are included with very finely disseminated Hematite (the most likely candidate) which impart a beautiful pinkish-red glow along this side. A delightful and most attractive well-crystallised Calcite from the world famous mine at Tsumeb.
