Chalcocite
Whoever first said "good things come in small packages" was obviously looking at this Chalcocite from the Pig Lode in 9 Level, Geevor Mine, at Pendeen, St. Just, Cornwall, England. Its that age old delight of mineralogy an d mineral collecting that no matter how many specimens you have seen form one locality, there is always some to come to light and surprise! At only 2.4 cm long, this elegantly simple bunch of parallel aligned Chalcocite crystals is a mini-show stopper, formed from double terminated, hexagonal prisms with flat, pinacoid terminations with bevelled edges and of a more unusual bronze gold colour, similar to the colour of pyrrhotite. Parts of the crystal have been hollowed out by natural etching and the crystals are attached to a little matrix, of a more typical silver-black-grey Chalcocite appearance. A beautiful thumbnail specimen.
