Pyromorphite
From the MMM mine at Broken Hill in New south Wales, Australia, an excellent cluster of beautifully developed, elongated clove brown Pyromorphite crystals, many measuring to a good 3.5 cm long! The Pyromorphite has developed as a converging pyramidal spray, composed from smaller stellate sprays with sub-sets of smaller crystals branching from much large crystals which form the structural framework. Look at the video and you'll see where this description is coming from! The Pyromorphite has a great lustre and it can defiantly be described as a Broken Hill classic! Every Broken Hill collection should include at least one of these varieties of Pyromorphite and this is a terrific example! Now usually referred to as the MMM mine, this was formerly called the British mine or Broken Hill South Mine. The British Mine was formed in 1887 to control Blocks 15 and 16 and operations extended both sides of the Menindee Road. The operations on the southern side of Menindee Road were bought by North mine which was subsequently bought by the MMM mine. As is apparent, the mining history along the line of lode is pretty complex!
