Calcite
This superb, highly aesthetic, and characteristic Cumbrian Calcite group is from Crowgarth mine near the village of Cleator Moor. The mines in this area of West Cumbria exploited the West Cumberland Iron Field; Cumberland being the original county name prior to it being changed to Cumbria in the early 1970s. Translucent to semi-transparent, colourless to milky Calcite crystals form complexly terminated scalenohedral crystals to 2.9 cm tall with pinkish-red blushed tips. The Calcite covers a hidden Hematite matrix. One Calcite crystal is cleaved, but the remainder are perfect. A quite gorgeous miniature from West Cumbria, ex. W. Goodchild Collection, collected around 1923.
