Description
The Allenheads mine (also known as Beaumont mine) lies just west of Weardale and for all intents and purposes appears to be part of the Weardale mining district. The town of Allenheads, and also the mine, are situated near to the triple-point county boundary of Cumbria, County Durham and Northumberland, both being in the latter county. This excellent large cabinet specimen of good-sized colourless Fluorite cubic crystals overgrown with druses of micro-Quartz crystals and dark blackish-brown Siderite is spectacular both in white and ultraviolet light. The Fluorite crystals are up to 1.7 cm on edge and are reasonably transparent. In LWUV they fluoresce a beautiful purple blue, bluer than purple, while exhibiting excellent zoning which is not apparent in visible light. In SWUV the fluorescence is fairly dim, but of a greyish lavender. A superb Allenheads Fluorite.
