A choice plate of magnificent black platy crystals of Specularite, the crystallised variety of Hematite, from the famous Florence mine adjacent to the town of Egremont in West Cumbria. Florence mine only produced a very limited suite of minerals, but what it lacked in variety, it more than compensated in quality. The Specularite crystals form thin vertical interlocked plates, jet black with a bright metallic lustre and of up to 1.5 cm wide. Nestling amongst these are three terminated glassy Quartz crystals with a slightly smoky tinge, covering a matrix of Kidney Ore Hematite. A stunning large miniature of Specularite and Quartz from Florence mine.
