Azurite

Three excellent intergrown crystals of Azurite measuring to 2.6 cm sit aesthetically on a matrix of drusy biscuit coloured Smithsonite encrusting a white-reddish coloured Dolomite shot through with black dendrites. From the world-famous Tsumeb mine in Namibia, the Azurite crystals are of a rich deep azure blue, with some surface alteration to dark emerald green Malachite. Where the Azurite is not coated with Malachite the azurite blue colour is readily apparent, unlike many Azurite specimens which appear almost black. The crystals are lustrous overall yet grade between glassy and waxy. The aesthetic is enhanced even more by the contrast with the attractive creamy to mustard-tan Smithsonite coating. A fine Azurite from Tsumeb.
