The Collada mine is situated close to the north coast of Spain in the Asturias region. The mine works the Collada vein, which was discovered in 1904, now famous for its beautiful Fluorite specimens. An impressive small cabinet specimen of intergrown, deep lilac and indigo Fluorite crystals showing a combination of cube and dodecahedron faces. The largest crystal measures 2.2 cm on edge and the most all-round exposed crystal measures 1.8 cm wide. The crystals are transparent, containing wispy translucent zones and all have mirror-flat faces with a bright glassy lustre. The crystal symmetry is outstanding, with every edge equally bevelled to the dodecahedron form. The faces are essentially perfectly square, although odd crystals exhibit slight deviations to a slightly elongated cube. The 9.0 x 7.8 cm bed of Fluorite crystals sit on a glassy, translucent acidic-lemon yellow to creamy-white Calcite matrix whose surface is textured with cleaved rhombs, all with a dazzling bright lustre. The Fluorite is beautifully transparent and translucent and, when backlit, the various sized crystals glow many shades of pale to intense indigo. A magnificent Spanish Fluorite from the Collada mine from the Dr Josef Clemente (1899-1987) collection of southern Germany, who purchased it in 1970.
