The Kamariza mines around the small town of Agios Konstantinos on the Attica Peninsula of southern Greece is a favourite amongst many mineral collectors, me included. I first visited these mines in the early 1990s and though I was in mineral paradise! For those of you new to this area, Kamariza was the former name of Agios Konstantinos, and hence the name of the mining district. This area, together with the adjacent Lavrion region is host to over 600 mineral species and is the type locality for 23. The combination of mineralogy, geology and historic mining sites make this a heady mix for the keen collector. This small cabinet specimen is a real beauty, with 1 mm bright olive to lime green acicular crystals of the copper arsenate Olivenite densely coating a shallow depression in a matrix of iron-rich gossan, typical of the Kamariza mines. This is a delightfully rich specimen of Olivenite from the Kamariza mining district.
