Galena
Renowned for superb Galena crystals, the Blackdene mine in Weardale, County Durham was best known for large cubo-octahedral crystals perched upon slabs of purple Fluorite crystals but this solid aggregate of Galena crystals is quite different. Firstly, it is extremely heavy for its size, due to the sheer quantity of dense Galena crystals. They form a fine crystallized plate of bright blue-grey metallic intergrown cubo-octahedral crystals. Individually, the crystals of Galena reach 1.6 cm across and 3-dimensionally they are in superb condition all around. Indeed, it appears almost like a 'floater', but with a thin point of attachment along one edge which is almost imperceivable. Here and there clusters of small colourless-white Quartz crystals coat the surface. A really super Blackdene Galena. Ex Michael Harris Collection (North Wales), no. 183.
