Chalcocite
It has to be said that Wisconsin is not a renowned mineral specimen producing state, but the Flambeau mine near Ladysmith in Rusk County has certainly given it some significant attention. Mined between 1993 and 1997, the Flambeau mine exploited a significantly enriched oxidation zone above an untapped exhalative massive sulphide deposit. This enrichment had converted primary Chalcopyrite into supergene Chalcocite and Bornite with some recrystallization, resulting in world-class Chalcocite crystals. The reason that the Chalcocite is of such high quality is not purely down to the size or perfection of the crystals, but owing to their magnificent surface patina and iridescence caused by the presence of Bornite. This stunning middling to large miniature sized Chalcocite crystal aggregate is an absolute classic from the early 1993 to 1994 discoveries at Flambeau mine. With pseudohexagonal crystals measuring to 1 cm clustered over a rounded form of Chalcocite with an iridescent gunmetal colour it simply exudes class. This colour of Chalcocite is a special feature of this Flambeau mine material, setting it apart from all other occurrences and elevating its aesthetic qualities. A 'modern' USA classic. This specimen comes with a custom-made acryllic display stand.
