CADMIUM Rich Smithsonite
A classic specimen of bright yellow cadmium enriched Smithsonite from the Sheshodonnell East mine at Carron in County Clare, Ireland. This Victorian lead mine was worked for only about one year between 1862 and 1863 and the Smithsonite, a zinc carbonate, was left as waste on the mine dumps. This is an excellent large miniature with zingy, acidic lemon cadmium Smithsonite infilling vugs and cavities in a hard, porous Quartz veinstone matrix. Analysis has shown the cadmium content to average about 0.6%, enough to impart one of the most vivid cadmium yellow coloured Smithsonites known to collectors. Please note the base of this specimen has been sawn flat, although this is completely invisible when displayed. An excellent and most striking cadmium Smithsonite from the classic Sheshodonnell East mine in County Clare.
