An extremely rare and fine specimen of lustrous Calcite from the Odin mine, close to the beautiful village of Castleton in Derbyshire, England. Light yellowish-cream, gemmy prismatic Calcite crystals measure to 2.5 cm, displaying multi-faced terminations. These crystals cover a dense, massive Calcite matrix. Odin mine is one of the oldest mines in Derbyshire and there is good evidence of lead mining here during Roman times. The Romans mined extensively in the area around Castleton as artifacts made from the local banded variety of Fluorite known as Blue John have been found throughout the former Roman Empire. Odin mine ended operations in 1870 and is now within the Peak District National Park and under the ownership of the National Trust, hence any form of mineral collecting is now strictly banned and tightly enforced. This is a superb specimen, made all the more special being from Odin mine.\n
