Calcite with Dolomite
Although not a lot of well crystallised Calcite has come my way from Greystone quarry, I am fairly certain this small cabinet specimen is the best I’ve ever handled from the locality. Greystone quarry, often referred to by collectors as “Greystones quarry”, is an operating road stone quarry about 3 miles south east of Launceston in Cornwall. The zone in which the quarry operates is crossed by numerous mineralised lodes which were once worked by Greystone silver lead mine, Wheal Sophia, North Tamar during the Victorian era. The Calcite forms as splendid, double terminated, elongated pseudo-hexagonal prisms; translucent milky white on one side of the specimen and light grey on the opposite side, the latter being what is likely considered the display face. The longest prism measures 2.1 cm and all Calcite, be it white or grey, has a matt surface coating of frosted Calcite. These prisms sit between pale lemon tinged creamy, curved Dolomite blades and a surface covered with tiny, gemmy colourless Quartz crystals.
