Fluorite with Calcite
A fabulous compact mound of cubic and rectangular mixed mauve and pale green Fluorite crystals with a preferential coating of creamy-white nail-head Calcite crystals. From Heights mine close to the village of Westgate in Weardale, County Durham, the crystals form up to 1.9 cm cubes and 2.5 cm distorted cubic crystals which range across the full spectrum from opaque cloudy off-white to quite gemmy pale purples and greens, with many crystals forming as interpenetrant twins. Under low magnification the Fluorite is seen to also have a light dusting of sub-mm bright glassy Quartz crystals, with the texture and grain-size of refined sugar. A delightful specimen and a good example of differently coloured Fluorite to that for which Height's mine is better known.
