Stank mine sits within the southerly Cumbrian peninsula between the towns of Ulverston to the north and Barrow-in-Furness to the south. Stank mined Hematite between 1871 and 1901 and at that time was in the county of Lancashire, hence this being the county name seen on many old labels. This part of northern England was incorporated into the newly formed county of Cumbria during the 1970s. Wonderful and quite distinctive Calcite specimens became associated with Stank mine and this is a splendid example of probably 100 to 150, perfectly formed modified scalenohedral Calcite crystals in vertical parallel alignment, covering a hidden thin matrix of limonite encrusted Hematite. The colourless to milky-white crystals are slightly rounded with a pearly lustre. Quite beautiful and every inch a Stank Calcite!
