Styrian Erzberg is a mountain in Austria, mined for its iron ore in the form of Siderite and Ankerite. The open pit operation possibly goes back as far as 800 AD and it is credited with being the largest siderite deposit in the world. This location has produced many species and varieties, one of its most famous being the Flos Ferri variety of Aragonite. This large cabinet specimen is one which must be handled with great care, as delicate rams-horn Aragonite crystals cover both back and front and, despite the specimen's size and weight, great delicacy is required in where to hold it and how to place it. The matrix is that of mixed light chocolate brown Siderite, Ankerite and Dolomite over which thin drusy coatings of glassy Aragonite are smeared. On the display face an 8 x 7 x 4 cm tall cluster of snow-white Flos Ferri forms a Medusa-like tangle of writhing snake-like crystals, branching and curled around one another. This spray is impressive and stands out against the much darker matrix. The back of the specimen, which sits at an acute angle to the base, is more densely populated with Flos Ferri, but as smaller crystals and sprays. An impressive large specimen from this famous Austrian locality.
