Pyromorphite
The famous MMM mine at Broken Hill in Australia worked the line of lode orebody and is situated within the city of Broken Hill towards the north-east. Pyromorphite is one of this mine's most iconic species and this small cabinet specimen is a real beauty! Gemmy, acidic lime green prisms of Pyromorphite form a carpet of acicular crystals across the micro-botryoidal surface of metallic greyish black Coronadite. The contrast between the Pyromorphite and Coronadite is striking and impressive. The individual Pyromorphite prisms emerge sub-vertically from the matrix and all tend to taper slightly outwards towards their terminations. The crystal length falls into two average sizes: one set of around 4 to 5 mm and the second set 1 to 3 mm. The overall shape of the display face is lozenge or diamond with an underlying light pinkish cream matrix of altered sandstone. A magnificent and beautiful Pyromorphite on Coronadite from the MMM mine at Broken Hill, NSW.
