Smithsonite var. Cuprian
A stunning green mineral specimen, this also happens to be a world-class green Smithsonite, one of the few we would ever see that is not from Tsumeb, from 40 years ago or more. Cuprian Smithsonite in crystals, with intense color, is unbelievably rare in the world. If this was Tsumeb, it would be priced at a higher premium because so many collectors simply put a premium on that famous location - even though this is actually all the more rare and unprecedented from Greece! Rich green layers of Smithsonite comprise the small-cabinet specimen from the Sounion Mine #6 in the ancient mining district of Lavrion. The lustrous, textured surface is attractive, and it gives dimensionality that lets light in to show off the gemmy-to-translucent interiors. The original layering took the shape of the curving knob of the matrix, giving an elegant shape overall. Collected in 2020, this is at the very top level of quality for the these quality, interesting Smithsonite specimens and is large enough and "neon green" enough to see from across a room. We were honored to buy this fabulous Greek collection, assembled as the private collection by a longtime dealer who grew up collecting and digging personally for decades there. The green Smithsonite suite, highlighted by this specimen, was one of the main reasons for the purchase.
