Quartz with Sulfur in Marble (Old classic)
Here is a very rare and interesting Quartz specimen from the Carrara marble quarries in Italy, valuable mines that have been almost continually worked since Roman times. It is an elongate piece of white marble with an elongate vug containing several, perfectly formed, glassy, water-clear Quartz crystals from a few millimeters to 2 cm in length. They are accompanied in the cavity by numerous, translucent to milky white Calcite crystals from 2 mm to 2.5 cm in size with all of them well formed except one tip of the large crystal at one end that is compromised. For added interest, there is a single, bright yellow, 4 mm Sulfur crystal adjacent to one of the Calcite crystals internal to the vug (very rare for the locale). This particular piece was mined in the 1800s and has a vintage label (also from the 1800s from appearances) associated with it, from the Alfred Schir collection of Bern, Switzerland.
