Magnetite
The Schauss collection is rich with the common minerals of all high level thumbnail collections, but then goes on to include an amazing breadth and depth of hundreds of species we normally do not see in competitive and valuable thumbnail collections. Every collector has an odd species favorite that is over-represented in the collection out of love and appreciation - even if friends may disagree and make fun of them mercilessly for buying oddballs (luckily, that is why there are enough minerals for all of us!). This is another magnetite, a strong focus for Alex. When he saw a sharp and amazing magnetite, he bought it! This one is a historical piece from the 1800s, which came through Lazard Cahn to Willard Wulff, a well known Arizona dealer of the mid 1900s (no labels survive, but this was told Alex by the previous dealer/owner and seems logical enough if it came from some old catalog... although again, no labels survive). It is from this ancient mine on the US East Coast and is a 2.6 x 1.6 x 1.4 cm sharp black octahedral single crystal flattened on (111) with unusual form.
