A large cabinet piece from the old classic finds of the late 1970s (before the N'Chwaning Mine material!), this rhodochrosite features not one but two styles of crystallization on the same specimen: Individual, classically-formed scalenohedra of rhodochrosite, to 1.5 cm in length, combined with clusters of truncated scalenohedra to 1.6 cm across, to form a beautiful specimen emplaced on massive, contrasting black manganese ore. The crystals and clusters are lustrous and translucent, and exhibit a lovely cherry red color when backlit even moderately. The photos speak for themselves. This is a Superb large rhodochrosite with no major damage or repairs, at a fraction of the usual price (as it came in a large trade deal to us). Nearly all of these were collected in a hurry, and by nonprofessionals at the time, and so most pieces have damage. The larger the piece, the more damage. This specimen though, aside from a few very trivial bits of edge wear, is remarkably intact, dramatic, and three-dimensional.
