Hydroxylapatite on Quartz
A tabular, sharp, almost hexagonal "Carbonate-fluorapatite" (now reclassified as hydroxylapatite) crystal perched on a cluster of flat Quartz crystals from the finds here in the end-1990s of a strange form of apatite that at first was called by at least 3 different names; and many said might even be a new apatite group species at the time, because of the combination of strange shape and color! This attractive and balanced miniature shows off a well-formed, flattened, translucent green and cream, zoned, one-inch Carbonate-fluorapatite crystal aesthetically placed on the tips of transparent, satin lustered Quartz crystals. The Quartz crystals are grown in a tight cluster and appear to be in parallel growth in that all of them, although relatively distinct, have perfectly parallel striations across all of the crystals, front and back! A very singular Carbonate-fluorapatite piece from this unique find of a very uncommon Apatite Group member. These are rare today. Again, like so much else in the collection, just a stunningly aesthetic miniature specimen from a find that produced a lot of "not so aesthetic" specimens, chosen for the beauty and sharp style.
