Vanadinite on Calcite (fluorescent)
Supremely lustrous, these orange-red Vanadinites are from the world's premier locality for the species. The faces of the sharp, hexagonal crystals are so glassy and mirror-like you would swear that these were polished gems. In person, you can easily tell how gemmy they are, with the light creating an internal luminosity that the camera tries to capture, but never fully can. The largest crystal is a solid 1 cm across, and the hundreds of Vanadinites are distributed quite evenly across the matrix, with bands of larger crystals winding their way on top of the smaller, earlier generation. Interestingly, the vivid red fluorescence of the tan matrix indicates that it is rich in sparkly crystals of tiny Calcite. The condition of piece is excellent, and the pics show just how choice this cabinet specimen is.
