Fluorite and Quartz
this really classic geometric cluster of light to dark purple Fluorite octahedrons with cubic modifications originates from the Huanggang mines in Inner Mongolia. The fluorites are totally transparent looking down the cube faces, and you can see all of the internal detail including how the Fluorite grew on the Quartz crystal matrix. The pleasing lavender color is highly unusual, as most such crystals are colorless or murky from this mine. The lustrous Fluorite crystals up to 4 cm, although clustered, are still very independently displayed on the piece and they are dominated by octahedral faces with see-through cube faces. The octahedral faces either have tiny growth hillocks on them or display a slightly satin luster. Groups of stubby, transparent to translucent Quartz crystals grace the periphery of the piece and also make up an upright 'appendage' coming out at an angle from the Fluorite cluster, that is also composed of numerous, milky, stubby Quartz crystals. Quite an interesting and aesthetic piece - more complicated as you study it longer! ex Steve Smale collection, from purchases around 2010-2012
