Rhodochrosite on Baryte
Rhodochrosites from the ancient iron and manganese mines in this area are German classics, and this small cab is heads above most. The large, exposed vug is covered with rice grain Rhodos that are lustrous and wine-red. In fact, they are similar to the wheat-sheaf habit from Africa, oddly enough. The Rhodos reach up to 9 mm in length, and the crystals in this unusual habit are well-formed, both of which are exceptional for the region and this mine. Ex. Schmidt Family Collection (1870 - 1925). Likely mined in the 1800's, this is an important and aesthetic specimen for what it is. Minor damage is accepted in context of the importance of the specimen for the locale.
