Ludlockite (Type Locality)

Tsumeb is the TYPE LOCALITY of Ludlockite, a rare lead-iron arsenite that was first found in 1968 on the 30th level of Tsumeb, in its deepest oxidation zone filled with all kinds of bizarre (and apparently very cool) mineralogy. This is a rich, superlative cluster of sharp, lustrous Ludlockite crystals with other species in association. The hair-like crystals range from 5 mm up to nearly a full centimeter. The luster and deep, rich, copper color are both visually stunning, and this dense cluster is quite beautiful. A terrific toenail/miniature of unusual richness and beauty for this find. The species is named for mineral dealers Frederick Ludlow Smith III and Charles Locke Key, who discovered the mineral in one pocket (a later pocket was found, still restricting this species to only two good pockets and perhaps only several dozen specimens of note). This specimen is actually from the collection of Charlie Key (Charles Locke Key), which I purchased in about 2007. It is stunning and beautiful for what it is, and worthy of a competitive exhibit as well.
