Calcite on Sphalerite
A splendent, first-class combination of Calcite and Ruby Jack Sphalerites from the Denton Mine in southern Illinois. There are two generations of Calcite, both gemmy and quite beautiful. The largest crystal is actually a pair of interpenetrating crystals, with the pair being 3.8 cm across. Mined in 1992, Ross Lillie noted on the back of his label that experience has shown that there is a direct correlation between the Sphalerite-rich ore and these gemmy, particularly rich orange Calcites. The aesthetics on this piece are exemplary. It is so sparkly in person, that it is hard to convey here. Between the excellent colors, luster, gemminess, and form, this piece is a real competition quality calcite of unusual character. RCL0934
