Powellite on Stilbite
Powellite at its best unarguably comes from India, and only a few pockets transcend "representative quality" to true greatness. This is from a now-legendary pocket of 2014, that produced what I believe to be the finest powellites in the world along with those from a previous pocket in 1998 or so (which had pale straw color, with scolecite association, and are entirely different therefore in appearance). This pocket will simply stand above all, in my thinking, for the shocking luster and intense color of the crystals. This specimen looks crafted, as if you molded stilbite putty around this gorgeous gemmy powellite crystal; a superb, glassy and gemmy, doubly terminated, amber-colored powellite crystal, measuring 3 cm in length, is emplaced on a matrix of pearlescent, translucent stilbite crystals to 1.5 cm in length. In today's marketplace most Indian powellite crystals are cream colored and barely translucent, a far cry from the beauty and color of this specimen. The powellite fluoresces a light straw yellow color, as do most of the species from here. This fine small cabinet specimen was in the Wally Mann collection until recently. It is of competitive quality.
