Psilomelane
Shiny hemispheres of Psilomelane make up the entire display face of this piece from the historic Crimora Manganese Mine in Virginia, that was operated intermittently from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Over a dozen, lustrous, rounded, charcoal gray botryoids of this uncommon manganese oxide are mounded and aggregated laterally on this piece. Rarely does Psilomelane occur in (relatively) attractive specimens like this. The adjoining hemispheres on the piece result in a hummocky surface and there is a subtle, artistic texture on all of them that provides some geometric relief. An alluring piece for a manganese oxide and in excellent condition! Ex. Robert Fender collection with label. We have not seen another to compare it to.
