Fluorite on Galena
Fluorite from the zinc mines of Tennessee is not uncommon, especially the purple cubes, however, this Fluorite specimen is atypical commands attention! The piece is dominated by a large, 7.5 x 5.2cm, very well-formed, completely transparent and lustrous, pale yellow Fluorite crystal that grew largely as an elongate corner crystal and the bottom two-thirds of the crystal has been etched and highlighted by a thin secondary growth of purple Fluorite! Thus, it has a "gem window" atop. The interior of the Fluorite is super clear with the main portion of the crystal is smooth enabling one to look right into the Fluorite to the Galena at the base and the remainder of the crystal is slightly etched providing a great textural and color contrast! At the base of the piece are two incomplete, but lustrous Galena clusters for accent. This is a GREAT Elmwood Fluorite combo piece! Highly unusual aesthetics.
