Baryte (Var: Hokutolite)
Hokutolite is an lead-rich variety of Baryte deposited by very acid hot springs. This is a HUGE, reddish-brown, moderately lustrous, subhedral crystal of this rare Baryte varietal and has a bit of sulfur on the back. Hokutolite generally also contains minor strontium and minute traces of radium, making recently deposited hokutolite mildly radioactive (although this disappears in a few decades and is no longer detectable in specimens in old collections). Accompanied by an old Ward's label. Ex. George Elling Collection.
