Malachite after Azurite
Blocky crystals of azurite measuring to just over 3.0 cm across covering the top of matrix. These have been replaced by green malachite. This is in good condition. Mining in Bisbee, Arizona began in the late 1870s after the discovery of rich copper deposits in the Mule Mountains. The district became one of the most important copper producing areas in the United States, with major underground mines later giving way to the large Lavender Pit open cut operation in the 1950s. Production declined in the late 20th century, and mining ended in 1975, leaving Bisbee as a historic mining town known for its copper minerals and preserved architecture.
