Nicely colored Tanzanite crystal with green parts with w very sharp termination. It displays a nice pleochroism with s shift from deep blue to purple, with some reddish flashes when lighted up along the c-axis. The green parts are enhanced when viewed under polarized light.
New an important Question: Is it heated? I do not know, I cannot tell. Actually, nobody can on this piece, at least not without a chemical analysis. "Burning" changes the oxidation state of elements causing brownish yellowish tones, which go away during heat treatment so that the blue color prevails. The color is a consequence of the chemistry, and heating is not a prerequisite to get top color. Heating can sometimes be easily detected when accompanying minerals are present - such as pyrite, which becomes at dull/damaged when heat treated ...
