Silver
Silver, 7 cm, from Freiberg District (probably the Himmelsfürst mine, Brand-Erbisdorf), Saxony, Germany. The Freiberg District mines were some of the earliest silver mines in Germany. Legend has it that silver was discovered there in 1168; more than 700 mines had been worked by 1500, but none are in operation today. The Freiberg Mining Academy actively encouraged mineral collecting by its students, and established a mineral dealership to help them acquire specimens. Many wire silvers from this region are preserved in collections, although they were rare in relation to the 5,500 tons of silver mined.
