Red Beryl
As one of the rarest of gemstones Red Beryl is virtually never used for cut stones, but even gemmy, well saturated red coloured crystals are extremely rare. This variety of Beryl is coloured by traces of manganese, but good crystals are only known from a handful of localities in Utah and New Mexico and even when well-formed, their crystals rarely reach more than a centimetre in length. This makes this large miniature specimen quite special. It features an 8 x 9 mm intense cherry-red hexagonal prismatic crystal that sits really well for viewing and which is extremely well formed compared with many, with a really well defined flat pinacoid termination. It sits on the classic white fine-grained rhyolitic matrix. This is a really high quality specimen of this extremely rare variety of Beryl and is from the Thomas Range area of Juab County, Utah, rather than from Beaver County.
