NATIVE Copper

The Lavender Open Pit Mine was a famous old large open pit copper mine at Bisbee, Arizona, which operated from 1954 to 1974. Although Native Copper was known to occur there, specimens are uncommon compared with some of the other copper mines in Arizona making this fine specimen from David Hardman's Collection quite significant. At 600 grams this tells you that this is quite a substantial Native Copper specimen, but it is its shape that is really unusual. It is quite 3-dimensional, like a branching coral, but made entirely from metallic copper. David Hardman's main interest in collecting was Native Copper, from everywhere worldwide. He collected extensively from the early 1960s onwards and it is highly likely that he obtained this specimen while the open pit was still operational. A fine and unusual Arizonan Native Copper.
