Sarrabus is a broad geographical area in southeast Sardinia immediately to the east of Cagliari. It is famous for its historic silver mines which produced Native Silver as ore. Thankfully some were kept as specimens, but not as many as we would like. Specimens are now rarely seen, and typically the Native Silver occurs as minute microcrystalline patches within matrix. This magnificent miniature specimen is a delight, and has it all to offer. Not only does it display a rich freestanding 2.5 x 2 cm aggregate of Native Silver wires, but they are perched dramatically upon matrix. This white matrix is predominantly Calcite but with a few flashes of golden Pyrite to brighten things up. Clearly an older specimen as judged by the fantastic patina displayed on the surface of the wires, this is reinforced by the presence of two old handwritten labels, one of which appears to mention the year 1907. A rare Sardinian specimen indeed, and something which collectors of Native Silver might be taken with, with its fine historic labels, but beautiful display credentials too.
