Siderite epimorph after Calcite with Quartz and Pyrite
These Siderite epimorphs after rhombic Calcite crystals are very distinctive, in a large part because of raised edges along preferential sides. They are a classic from Turț Mine in Negrești-Oaș, Satu Mare, Romania, but rarely are they seen in such large and presentable specimens as this large cabinet piece. The light caramel coloured Siderite has initially replaced the sharp rhombic Calcite but then a secondary thin outer layer (sometimes slightly detached from the crystal) of sugary microcrystalline Siderite has developed. The rhombic crystals reach 1.9 cm on edge. An unusual large cabinet specimen and fine example of complex epimorph replacement chemistry.
