Roşia Montană in Romania is renowned for its paper-thin foil-like leaf Native Gold, but this dramatic miniature-sized specimen takes things to a whole new level. Here, the main 'leaf' rises up like a mermaid sat upon a rock, but it is not only its shape, but its surface texture that demands attention. I invite you to zoom into the image and inspect the surface of the Gold. Stunning, or what! Super bright, and covered in the most amazing triangular growth patterns, this Roşia Montană Gold is exceptional. The rock which the Native Gold sits on is also rather lovely - a porphyry coated on top by a thin layer of Quartz from which the Native Gold sprouts. I have seen many Roşia Montană specimens and this is the first I have seen where the rock is so distinctive. It is from the superb systematic collection assembled by the brothers Martin and Michael Günther (1951-2007 & 1956-2021) and really does show what good taste they had.
