Azurite
Azurite, 8.9 cm, from the Milpillas mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico. The Milpillas deposit, about 13 miles south of the Arizona border, was not discovered until the 1990s. A thousand feet of overburden obscured the ore deposit, requiring extensive drilling and geological studies to determine the economic feasibility of mining at such depth. Mining for copper commenced in 2006, and has yielded a cornucopia of azurite, malachite, cuprite and brochantite specimens. Well crystallized azurite is widely sought after and highly valued by mineral collectors. The unusual vivid blue, rose-like specimen shown here, collected in January 2012, is especially suitable for museum display.
