Schorl, Spessartine
Schorl and spessartine, 6.4 cm, from Appleton, Cecil County, Maryland. This specimen was found by then Curator Peter Leavens, on a road leading into a new development near Elkton, Maryland, in the mid-1970s. A quartz boulder by the side of the road showing crystals of schorl attracted his attention. When the boulder was hit with a sledge hammer, the crystals popped out. This Maryland locality is less than a mile from the Delaware border, and years later sprays of schorl in quartz without spessartine were found in the building of the Christianstead development in Newark, Delaware.
