Malachite, Azurite
Malachite (green) replacing blue azurite, 12.7 cm, from the Tsumeb mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia. This specimen is from the Perkins Sams Pocket, named after the wealthy collector who purchased most of the find. Sams had worked on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, and owned a pipeline company, an oil and gas holding company (Banner Energy) and a newspaper. During the 1980s when the malachite and azurite specimens were found, he was often a financial backer of mineral ventures and acquired a large and spectacular private collection that he displayed in his Midland, Texas, office. His collection finally went to the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
